Orderly books, 1778-1779.

Orderly books, 1778-1779. The first two, dated July 22, 1778 - October 31, 1778 and August 15, 1778 - November 7, 1778, contain Washington's general orders from White Plains and Fredericksburg, as well as McDougall's division orders from Camp Second Hill, New Milford. They also contain Gates's orders from Danbury. The first includes material on courts-martial, and resolutions of the Continental Congress; it was kept by Richard Platt. The second, kept by Major Ronald S. McDougall, McDougall's son and aide-de-camp, is similar. The third, dated October 31, 1778 - April 29, 1779, from from Camp Second Hill, Peekskill and Fishkill, contains division orders, with extracts from headquarters orders, and was kept by Richard Platt. It includes resolutions of the Continental Congress, material on courts-martial, instructions relating to hygiene in camp, and material on shortages of clothing, fodder, and food, including a list of controlled prices for foodstuffs in both "hard money" and "Continental or York money."

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander.
